The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has approved 54 constitutional reform motions during its National Delegates Conference held at the University of Ghana Stadium on Friday, July 19, 2025. The reforms are part of efforts to restructure and strengthen the party ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Over 5,500 delegates from across Ghana participated in the conference under the theme “Rebuilding Together with Our Values.”
Major Reforms Approved
The approved reforms touched on governance, internal elections, disciplinary processes, and expanded participation within the party. Some of the key reforms include:
-
Formal adoption of the party’s motto, colors, and symbols into the constitution.
-
Restructuring the disciplinary process by empowering the Disciplinary Committee, instead of the Executive Committee, to recommend suspensions.
-
Granting voting rights to more party officials including regional secretaries, treasurers, and TESCON representatives.
-
Allowing current and former external branch executives to vote in internal elections.
-
Strengthening the roles of Party Elders, Patrons, and Standing Committees.
-
Providing increased recognition for Youth, Women, and Nasara organizers at various levels of the party.
These reforms are expected to promote inclusiveness, transparency, and efficiency in the party's internal administration.
Two Key Proposals Rejected
Despite the broad support for reform, delegates rejected two notable proposals:
-
Polling Station Supervision Motion: A proposal to shift supervision of polling station and electoral area elections from local party structures to the Regional Executive Committees was rejected. Delegates favored maintaining local control to ensure grassroots participation.
-
Youth Age Limit Motion: A motion seeking to redefine the party’s youth age limit from under 40 to under 35 was also voted down. Delegates opted to retain the existing definition, despite growing calls for alignment with national and international standards.
A Step Toward 2028
The conference forms part of the NPP’s strategic roadmap toward reclaiming power in the next general election. Party leadership described the reform package as a necessary step to modernize operations, increase accountability, and strengthen the party base across all levels.
