Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo‑Markin has firmly criticised the Mahama government, alleging that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is appropriating and misrepresenting key infrastructure and policy achievements originally implemented by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Delivering a speech at the NPP’s National Delegates Conference at the University of Ghana Stadium on 19 July 2025, Afenyo‑Markin acknowledged the party’s 2024 electoral defeat but contested its characterization as a failure. He framed the loss as the result of intertwined crises—including the banking upheaval, the COVID‑19 pandemic, and the Russia‑Ukraine war—that challenged governance at an unprecedented scale.
He highlighted the NPP’s record-building efforts: the roll-out of Free SHS, the “One District, One Factory” industrialisation agenda, public infrastructure investments, and expansions in STEM and digital education. He also emphasised that the economic recovery initiated in early 2024 was sustained by robust gold and foreign-exchange reserves—assets he said the current administration is now depending on to stabilise the cedi.
Afenyo‑Markin argued that the NDC was actively repackaging these initiatives under new labels. Whether it was the so-called “24‑hour economy” or the reinstatement of the Gold Board, he maintained that these were continuations of NPP programmes being falsely marketed as fresh policy innovations by President Mahama’s government.
He warned NPP supporters not to be swayed by this “propaganda” and urged them to remember the groundwork laid by the previous administration: “The foundation they are standing on was laid by this party… our sacrifices… our bold leadership in the face of crisis.”
Afenyo‑Markin concluded by calling for unity and a renewed commitment within the NPP, urging delegates to build upon their achievements and “reimagine our future… We rise again in unity and in the enduring spirit of our party.”
