Jacob Zuma Urges Africa to Rely on Its Own Resources

Accra, 17 August 2025 — Former South African President Jacob Zuma has urged African nations to wean themselves off Western dependence, arguing that the West only left Africa with English language and little else of value.

Zuma’s Message

Speaking during the Homowo Festival in Accra, where he was a special guest of the Ga Mantse, Zuma stressed:
“The West only taught us English. Beyond that, we must use our own resources, our own knowledge, and our own traditions to develop.”

Historical Context

Zuma referenced Africa’s colonial past, accusing Western nations of exploiting natural resources while leaving the continent in poverty. His comments were met with loud cheers from cultural groups present at the festival.

Public Reactions

While some praised Zuma’s Pan-Africanist message, critics pointed to his controversial political record in South Africa, where he faces corruption allegations. “He may be right about Africa, but his own leadership was deeply flawed,” one Ghanaian analyst noted.

What’s Next?

His remarks add momentum to growing calls for African economic independence, particularly in the wake of Ghana and other states strengthening ties with BRICS countries.
