Transport fares go up by 15% effective Saturday

Road transport companies have concluded negotiations on the increase in fares and set the percentage increase at 15 percent.

These new fares will go into effect on Saturday, February 26, 2022. They include fares for shared cabs, intra-city (Tro-Tro), and intercity (long-distance) routes.

Transportation unions had previously proposed a 30 percent increase. However, after a meeting today, Monday, Feb. 21, 2022, operators agreed to increase public transit fares by 15 percent.

"We ask all commercial transportation operators to comply with the new fares and post them at three loading terminals," the transportation group said in a statement released after the meeting.

The increase is in line with the administrative agreement on public transport fares and was decided after intensive negotiations with stakeholders and in view of the plight of riders, commuters and the public.

It also referred to the current trends in the international market and their impact on domestic fuel prices.

The decision to increase fares was necessitated by the country's economic distress and its negative impact on drivers' work.

Various transport associations cite the high cost of fuel, high import duties on vehicles, and the increased cost of spare parts and lubricants as reasons.

We ask all operators and the public to cooperate in the successful introduction of the new tariffs," said the appeal of road transport operators.
