He stated that "these military interventions are never a panacea to address the challenges facing a nation."
Delivering his New Year greetings to the diplomatic corps at Peduase Lodge in Aburi in the Eastern Region on Wednesday, President Akufo-Addo cited the economy and security as factors in coups in West Africa.
Although President Akufo-Addo acknowledged the reasons for coups, however, he said that "no reason is good enough to override the freely expressed will of the people."
He reiterated his stance that West Africa will remain insecure until dramatic efforts are made to consolidate and reinforce democratic principles necessary for economic development and the protection of freedom.
He called on international bodies to support sanctions against African countries that had staged coups.
He believes this will allow countries that have been taken over by the military to return to democracy within the agreed timetable.
For her part, the Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, Mrs. Claudia Turbay Quintero, praised President Akufo-Addo for the role he has played in ensuring peace and dialogue among the different groups in the country.
