Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has come to the defense of current captain Andre Ayew following his sending off against Comoros.
With the Black Stars surprisingly trailing 1-0 to the East Africans, Andre Ayew slid the ball into the net after Kamaldeen Sulemana's shot was blocked by Salim Ben Boina.
Although he touched the ball first, Ayew's momentum carried him into the goalkeeper's arm.
While Bonia was treated and eventually substituted, the referee was instructed to review the incident on the video monitor.
After watching a few frames, the referee decided to send off the Ghanaian captain.
On social media, most Ghanaians felt the decision was extremely harsh, stressing that
the ball was there to be won after the goalkeeper spilled it.
This opinion was also shared by Asamoah Gyan when he gave his thoughts on
the incident during the halftime break on SuperSport.
Gyan called the referee's decision harsh and explained that his former national teammate
only had eyes for the ball when he slid in.
"It was a harsh decision by the referee," Gyan lamented.
"He slid in and was going to score. He got the ball first, but unfortunately, he collided
with the goalkeeper's hand."
The Black Stars need a win to qualify for the next round of the competition
but trailed 1-0 at the break.
