Presidential Appeal: Mahama and Opoku-Agyemang Thank Ghanaians for Overwhelming Solidarity After Helicopter Crash

Accra, 18 August 2025 — President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang extended heartfelt gratitude to Ghanaians for their show of unity after the military helicopter crash on 6 August, which claimed the lives of eight officials, including two ministers.

A Nation United in Mourning

In a statement released by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Presidency thanked Ghanaians and institutions nationwide. The solidarity—from traditional and religious leaders, civil society, security services, the diplomatic corps, and individuals across the country—was described as deeply consoling during this period of sorrow.

“Your messages of sympathy, your presence at the state funeral, your practical assistance, and the many acts of kindness extended to the bereaved families have provided great consolation in this time of sorrow,” the statement read.

Honoring the Fallen with Dignity

Special recognition was given to individuals and corporate organizations that ensured the victims received a dignified burial. The display of national compassion and unity, leaders said, reflected Ghana’s resilience even in grief. Flags at public buildings have since been restored to full mast as a symbolic gesture of returning to national duties while honoring the departed. Support Abroad and Beyond

President Mahama also expressed appreciation to global leaders who offered condolences and support. Liberian President Joseph Nyuma Boakai and Vice President Jeremiah Koung Sr. were among those who extended heartfelt messages and personal gestures, reinforcing diplomatic solidarity.

Government Steps to Care for Victims’ Families

In a related development, President Mahama announced the launch of a Children’s Support Fund, initially seeded with GH₵500,000 from Stanbic Bank. The fund is designed to safeguard the futures of the children of the bereaved, covering education, healthcare, and basic welfare needs. A transparent framework will be finalized within 30 days. Posthumous military promotions were also announced as a mark of respect. What’s Next?

  • Support Fund rollout: The government will publish guidelines and monitor the fund’s transparency and reach.

  • Community healing: Interfaith services and memorials continue, reaffirming national unity.

  • Administrative transition: Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson and Lands Minister Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah have stepped in as acting Defence and Environment Ministers, respectively, ensuring continuity of governance.
