High Court Dismisses K.T. Hammond’s Election Petition, Slaps Him with GHC 60,000 Fine

Obuasi, 20 August 2025 — The Obuasi High Court has thrown out the election petition filed by former Adansi Asokwa MP Kobina Tahiru Hammond against the result of the 2024 parliamentary election, while imposing a GHC 60,000 fine on him for misusing court time.

Background: A Contest Marred by Absences

Hammond filed his petition in January 2025, challenging the legitimacy of Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani’s narrow victory—Dorani polled 14,229 votes against Hammond’s 13,275, a difference of 954 votes. Despite the significance, Hammond notably failed to appear in court on three consecutive occasions, a fact cited by Justice Kwabena Twumasi in rendering the dismissal ruling.

“Proceeding in the absence of the petitioner and his counsel was necessary to uphold judicial efficiency,” the court noted.

Legal Weariness and the Fine

Justice Twumasi described the petition as a drain on judicial resources, underscoring the importance of respectful and efficient court proceedings. The GHC 60,000 fine, reserved for legal costs, was seen as a reprimand to prevent frivolous use of the court system.

Reactions from the Affected Parties

Richard Andy, counsel for Mr. Dorani, expressed relief that the matter had reached closure:

“This ruling allows the MP to direct full attention to serving the constituency without ongoing distractions.”
Meanwhile, political watchers in Adansi Asokwa say the dismissal brings stability, which is urgently needed for local development and healing divisions following a hard-fought election.

Constituents Welcome Finality

Residents, previously caught in the crossfire of appeals, now voice hope for renewed progress.

“We can now turn our attention back to roads, schools, and power — not petitions,” commented Nana Kwame, a community leader.

What’s Next?

With the legal challenge settled, Dorani has pledged to unify constituents and deliver on campaign promises. Observers note this ruling sends a firm message that, moving forward, the courts will penalize undue delay and insist on due legal process. For many in the constituency, justice has arrived—and it's time for both healing and development.
