GES Opens Applications for Teacher Promotions Nationwide

Accra, 17 August 2025 — The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially announced the opening of applications for promotions, offering thousands of teachers across the country the chance to rise to senior ranks.

A Step Toward Motivating Teachers

The promotion exercise, which covers positions from Assistant Director II up to Deputy Director, forms part of government’s commitment to improving teacher motivation and strengthening the education system.

In a statement, the GES explained that eligible teachers can apply through its online portal, with assessments focusing on professional knowledge, years of service, and leadership experience.

“This process is designed to recognize hardworking teachers who have contributed significantly to the development of education in Ghana,” a GES spokesperson said.

Teachers’ Concerns and Union Reactions

While many teachers have welcomed the opportunity, some have expressed frustration over delays that marred previous promotion exercises. They are urging the GES to ensure transparency and efficiency this year.

“We spend years teaching in difficult conditions. Promotion is one of the few ways to reward us, but the system must be fair and timely,” said Efua Mensah, a teacher in Cape Coast.

Teacher unions have thrown their weight behind the exercise but warned against favoritism and political interference.

The Bigger Picture

Education analysts say the promotion of teachers, if done fairly, will improve morale and performance in classrooms nationwide. However, they stress that promotions must be complemented by improved salaries, access to resources, and continuous training.

With Ghana’s education system under pressure to meet global standards, many view this year’s promotion exercise as a critical step in motivating teachers to deliver better results for students.
