2025 WASSCE Begins With Over 461,000 Candidates Nationwide

Accra, 18 August 2025 — The 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) has officially begun across Ghana, with more than 461,000 candidates sitting for the papers amid heightened security and expectations.

Nationwide Rollout

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) confirmed that candidates are spread across 987 examination centers. The examinations, which will last six weeks, cover core subjects such as Mathematics, English, Integrated Science, and Social Studies, in addition to electives.

Security Measures

Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum assured the public of fairness and transparency:
“Special security arrangements have been made to prevent exam malpractice and paper leakages. WAEC is working closely with the Police Service to protect the integrity of this year’s exams.”

Student Concerns

Some candidates expressed mixed feelings. While many were hopeful about their preparation, others admitted anxiety due to interruptions caused by last year’s teacher strikes. “We’ve worked hard, but the pressure is very high,” said Mary Amoako, a final-year student from Kumasi.

What’s Next?

The first results are expected in December. Officials say this year’s WASSCE will test the effectiveness of government’s Free SHS program, which has produced the largest graduating cohort in Ghana’s history.
