The Economic Fighters League has called the controversial e-tax an unfair increase in the tax burden on average and low-income earners.

According to the group, the introduction of the MoMo tax shows the insensitivity of the political establishment to the plight of average Ghanaians in their struggle for a decent standard of living and sustainable livelihood.

In a statement, it pointed to alternative sources of revenue, namely, "Reduction in emoluments for Article 71 officeholders, abolition of gratuities, removal of frivolous government expenditures such as the purchase of vehicles, medical services outside Ghana for elite government administrators, rental of a private jet for the president; abolition of concessions for rich foreign companies, especially in the oil and natural resources sectors. The hybrid system in our upstream oil and gas production, for example, results in 70% of production revenues going to private companies known for tax evasion."

He also called for "restoring control over our own resources-Ghana must not generate less than 50% of production revenue in any sector of our economy, increasing production and industry, restructuring the economy to benefit the majority and not just a few, and ending corruption and theft by empowering institutions of accountability such as the Auditor General, the judiciary, the police, etc. to operate transparently and effectively."

The group explained that the government NPP-NDC sold Ghana Telecom - the country's only digital platform - to a private company that is now one of the few real beneficiaries of the impending MoMo tax collection on behalf of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).
