PARIS - Incumbent Emmanuel Macron won the first round of the French presidential election on Sunday ahead of far-right Marine Le Pen. According to initial projections, the two will face off in a runoff on April 24.
The projection by polling firm Ipsos, released shortly after polls closed at 8 p.m., showed Macron receiving 28.1 percent of the vote and Le Pen 23.3 percent.
The final results are expected later this evening.
