Employees of Ghana Textiles Limited (GTP) have launched a demonstration to draw the attention of the government to the removal of Mrs. Fatoumata Doro, the Managing Director.
The employees, dressed in red ribbons, cordoned off the company's main entrance and prevented vehicles from entering the premises.
The group held placards, chanted and danced on the premises from 0600 hours until noon, and threatened to continue the demonstration until the MD was removed.
Some of the placards read, "Developing a marketing strategy is not done with family and friends," "MD on the way to collapsing our enviable and century-old global brand," and "Profitability requires smart hiring."
Joseph Kaoletey Kugblenu, the union president of the GTP branch of the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU), told GNA that the main reason for the demonstration was to demand the abolition of MD.
Mr. Kugblenu said that while they were happy that a woman had been appointed MD for the first time in the company's history, she had refused to consult the union on decisions that might affect workers before sending correspondence to employees.
He explained that at GTP there was the local union and the Professional and Management Staff Union (PMSU), which together were referred to as the council that MD must consult on all major decisions.
He said that although GTP's CEO claimed the company was €23M in debt, he had taken steps to hire about 10 people for management, which would increase costs.
He said the 10 included the digitalization manager, communications and transformation manager, public relations officer, sales director and retail product manager, among others.
