Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has assured residents of Apiatse in the Western Region that the government will support them in rebuilding their community.

He said the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government will rebuild the houses destroyed in the tragic explosion yesterday.

During a visit to the area today, Dr. Bawumia said everything will be done to alleviate the suffering of the survivors and community members.

"As for the destroyed houses, we are already thinking about how to rebuild the community here. I want to assure Nananom that His Excellency has already given the instruction. We have already talked to the government housing agency and are in contact with the mining communities here. We will try as soon as possible to establish facilities that will help the displaced people. That will be a priority for us."

During a visit to some injured victims of the disaster at the Aseda Health Centre in Bogoso, Dr. Bawumia said the government will pay the medical bills of those injured in the blast.

Meanwhile, an evacuation plan has been activated to take victims in critical condition to medical facilities in Accra for further treatment.
The Ministry of Information confirmed Thursday evening, Jan. 20, that 17 people have so far died in the blast.
Of the 76 people rescued so far, 59 are injured.
