In a post on social media, the president offered condolences to the dead and the surviving victims.
He wrote: "I have just been informed of the circumstances that led to an explosion in Apiate, near Bogoso in the Western Region, killing people and destroying the property of residents."
"It is a truly sad, unfortunate, and tragic incident, and on behalf of the government, I extend my deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wish the injured a speedy recovery."
"The police, the armed forces, and the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) are coordinating their efforts to contain the situation, and I have instructed NADMO to ensure that the residents of the city are helped quickly.
"The government will spare no effort to help the residents of Apiate return to normalcy quickly."
According to reports, the explosion occurred when a vehicle carrying explosives from Kumasi to a mine in the area detonated.
Several people are feared killed in the blast.
